ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

A Notary Public verifies only the identity of the individual(s) who signed the document(s) to which the notary stamp is attached, and not the truthfulness, accuracy, or validity of the document(s).

ID Requirements

At the time of the appointment, the signer(s) must provide proper identification to prove identity. The following lists acceptable identification documents for the state of California:
  • An identification card or driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles or any other State DMV or similar office
  • An identification card issued by any branch of the armed forces of the United States
  • A passport issued by the Department of State of the United States
  • A passport issued by a foreign government which must be stamped by the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services)
  • A driver’s license issued by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue driver’s licenses
  • An inmate identification card issued by the Department of Corrections, if the inmate is in custody (an ID bracelet only, is not acceptable)
  • An employee identification card issued by an agency of office of the State of California or by any agency or office of a city and/or county in California
For clarification, international driver’s licenses are not sufficient proof of identity. The identification document must contain at least as much information as contained in the signature identification.  For instance, if John Smith, Jr. is signing the document, the identification document must also contain the “Jr.” identity. Note, there are special circumstances if no ID can be produced; please call to get more information regarding credible witnesses.
